These aren't fanfics, but Skin Horse and Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki are two off the wall webcomics that I follow faithfully. I recommend them to anyone who needs a laugh or who enjoys unusual comedies.

Soulless by Gail Carriger. I was up WAY too late last night finishing it.

I'm not going to be all that ambitious, so I'm doing level 2- Two Sexy Werewolves ( I need to read 12 Speculative Romance novels). So this post will deal just with the books I've read in this category!

So, to keep my self motivated this year with the large (75) amount of books I took upon myself to read, I signed up for (among others):

I'm doing the first level which is 12 books.

1. The Thin Man

The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett is a noir style murder mystery taking place soon after Prohibition in New York City. The book starts out with Nick in a bar, meeting Dorothy (the daughter of an old client). With that meeting Nick is reluctantly dragged into the mess that is the Wynant Family. Clyde Wynant hasn't been seen for a couple monthes, which isn't unusual for the eccentric inventor, but becomes a problem when his mistress ends up dead and he is accused of the murder. This book takes you on a chase from high-rise apartments to grungy speakeasies as Nick tries to avoid being drawn into the mess, and then tries to clear his name as a third body is found.

Dorothy, the youngest, claims to be looking for her father to get back in touch with him. She is very dramatic, and I really can't tall you how much of what she tells Nick is the truth or fiction. Gilbert, the oldest, doesn't have any particular reason to look for their father. He is very scientifical, and he is asking odd questions & doing experiments to further his knowledge. Mimi, the ex-wife, is as dramatic as her daughter, and also prone to violence. I'm not sure just what her relationship with Nick is, they both make comments to the effect he can't stand her, but when she insinuates the had an affair when he was working for Mr. Wynant, Nick doesn't say anything. Adding to this odd crew is Nora, Nick's wife who spends most of the book getting him drinks and babying Dorothy; Guild, the policeman in charge of investigating the murders; MacCaulay, Wynant's accountant/lawyer; and slew of other minor characters.

This is told in first person, which I don't usually care for. I did like this because while being first person, you aren't treated to Nick's inner monolouge.

EDIT: I have given up on the Outlander Challenge. I haven't been able to finish the first book yet, and its May. I didn't want to, but I don't see my self finishing the rest of the books by News Year.

So I was reading some past entries on Ilona Andrew's blog, and she had a link up for Literary Escapism. Wandering around the site, I found these two challenges I am signing up for:




I have found some additional challenges I'm going to try:

Read Your Own Books, the Alphabet Challenge, and I plan on doing the Goodreads reading challenge next year (75 books), along with NaNoWriMo (if I can ever even start it!). On the to the Non book/writing related, I want to try to do a sewing project a month, and end the year with something wearable!

Next year is going to be a busy one! So I will welcome any book/author suggestions if you have some.

Depends. If I like the guy & I'm interested in continuing to see him, I'll let him. If I don't plan on seeing him again, I insist on paying for my own.

I posted previously about a almost finished quilt my friend gave me. Well, I picked out the binding fabric based on your guys suggestions, and I finished the binding this weekend. Which happened to remind why I hate binding quilts in the first place!
